Elegant Baby Shower Cake

We don’t often do baby shower cakes, but when a super sweet mother of a former brides asks SUPER nicely we just can’t refuse.    It also doesn’t hurt to let us make whatever we want and give us no budget at all; but we still kept it reasonable.  We made this three tier pale pink buttercream covered cake.  For the bottom tier we just molded some lace with a silicone mold and painted it with a pearl luster dust.

Blush and Gold Wedding Cake

We got to make a PINK wedding cake! Squeal! It was “blush” but we know that really means pink! I love a bride that does something different! We made this three tier cake with French buttercream which is all butter and “non crusting”. Once the cake is perfectly smooth, we chill it in the freezer for about an hour before we do the stenciling. If it gets too cold the cake will get condensation and that causes your stencil buttercream not to stick and that is bad.

Buttercream Rosette Ruffles

This cake is a fully buttercream iced and decorated except for the gumpaste flowers

Sometimes we get to try an established look but with a new twist.  Ruffles are mostly done with fondant but most customers want to avoid it.  We tried to accomplish the same look but with buttercream.  I’m really happy with the outcome and learned a lot on this one cake.  The sweet bride was willing to trust me without ever seeing what it would look like and I’m very grateful for her faith in my abilities.

Our Cross Country Cake Adventures

A few months ago I was approached with a rather odd request… make my nephew’s wedding cake.  Now I know that upon first read that doesn’t seem terribly odd, but let me finish… his wedding was going to be in New Hampshire, and I live WAYYY down south in GA.  Yeah, see?  But Sean and his fiance Kirsten were such a cute couple that I just couldn’t turn them down.

Delivering a fully decorated wedding cake 17 hours and and little over a 1000 miles away can be a daunting task and honestly one that I didn’t feel I (nor my cake) was up to.

Wedding Cakes with Fresh Flowers

No matter how much a cake decorator wants to make/sell gumpaste flowers, many brides only want fresh flowers.  I have found that most of the time that it’s not about the price, but the a overall look.  Fresh flowers are just soften the entire look of the cake.

The logistics of fresh flowers on wedding cakes can be tricky.  A wedding cake should not be at a wedding too early.

Happy Birthday Cole!

Bakers, do you know how to make a cake that has copyrighted material? According to Icing Smiles, give it away! That means don’t post it on your website for sale or advertise how much it would cost on Facebook. That’s about the only way to get past the strict laws that many companies WILL ENFORCE (and some will still debate that). I’m not going to lie, it’s a little scary when you get an overnight letter from FedX,

Piped Lace Wedding Cake

I’m going to post a little quick entry today.  It’s the first week of May and I have a BUNCH of cakes to work on!  We are getting a lot more requests for colored wedding cakes and I think that’s great!  This a khaki color which isn’t always the easiest color to achieve.  I sure wish I had one of the paint color mixing machines at Home Depot!

I used an Evil Cake Genius lace stencil and the piped an outline with a #1 tip.

Safari Animal Birthday Cake

We create so few birthday cakes these days that when we get to make one, we tend to go a little overboard.   The cake is really a basic design to be a backdrop for the real stars, the animals.  I added a small piece of styrofoam to lift the top tier so I could have a place to hang the vines.   It really is best for the sake of stability.

We marbled a little fondant for the waterfall  and disguised the source with fondant rocks.

Monster Truck Birthday Cake

We were asked to make a cake for a vendor’s grandson and we were given free reign on the design.  I love that, but sometimes it stresses me out!

Anything I want!?! Oh. I have to consider how
Much the I have left in the week? Well that happens with lots things doesn’t it!

The final cake only had one tier that was all fondant and that was the tire.

Book Collection Groom’s Cake

Can you believe we’ve done five book themed wedding or groom’s cakes?  Who knew it was such a big thing?  The sweet little couple that wanted this cake knew exactly what they wanted, titles and colors.  All I had to do was make the cake.  The groom wanted raised letters, so no edible images. We cut these out of modeling chocolate.  We used all modeling chocolate in fact. Not only does it taste better,
